Rallying Round for Research

Waiting for the moment when a diagnosis is made can feel like a lifetime. For Schnitzer Steel’s Oakland safety manager, Dean Lauerman, that moment came four years ago – Dean found out he has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Currently, there is no known cause or cure for MS.

Undaunted, Dean – with full support of his Schnitzer Steel family – took up the charge to raise awareness about MS and funds for research breakthroughs. For the past four years, Dean has participated in the MS Walk, raising more than $5,500 for local research efforts and rallying volunteers and in-kind donations for the event. And, in his health care regime, Dean has begun to participate in clinical trials, a leading-edge practice dedicated toward promising research about MS.
