Fired Up For Safety

Without question, Rosie Atilano, a dedicated employee at Schnitzer Steel’s facility in Sacramento, admits a strong tie to another profession – firefighting.

It’s only natural. The 1848 gold rush lured her grandfather Peter Mangan to Sacramento where he became a volunteer fireman. One hundred and fifty years of continuous service later, the Mangan family has a legacy of sons and grandsons following in their patriarch’s footsteps as firefighters for the Sacramento Fire Department. And Rosie carries on the connection in her role as a founding member of the local fire museum – Pioneer Mutual Hook & Ladder Society.

For more than a decade, Rosie has devoted herself to the Society’s mission, helping preserve the history of fire service as well as raising funds for the museum. These efforts safeguard a record of this illustrious past and allow the organization to make contributions to the local burn center. Schnitzer Steel shows its support for her efforts, donating funds for the museum and encouraging Rosie’s attendance at the nonprofit’s monthly meetings.
