Key events in the history of the Steel Manufacturing Business:

1968
  • Cascade Steel Rolling Mills, Inc. founded in McMinnville, OR (near Portland).
1969
  • Cascade Steel ships first finished steel products.
1984
  • Schnitzer Steel acquires Cascade Steel, which becomes the first member of Schnitzer’s Steel Manufacturing Business (SMB). The new business unit is vertically integrated with Schnitzer’s existing Metals Recycling Business (MRB) as MRB can supply SMB with the ferrous scrap metal its uses as its feedstock.
1986
  • Cascade Steel completes rebuild of rolling mill #1.
1996
  • Cascade Steel completes construction of rolling mill #2.
2004
  • Cascade Steel completes construction of a new 108 ton Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) in their melt shop.
2007
  • Cascade Steel completes installation of new reheat furnace and billet craneway which increases production capacity to nearly 800,000 tons annually.
2008
  • Cascade Steel sells 776,000 tons of finished steel products in fiscal 2008.
