Intermodal Cargo Services
Our Portland, Oregon deep water port offers a cost-effective source for handling of break-bulk and bulk cargoes providing access to the Pacific Northwest marketplace and beyond. Since 1974, we have reliably served the needs of the area’s metals industry and specialty bulk cargo movers. We have the organization, experience, facilities and equipment to serve your bulk transportation needs.
We perform intermodal movements of raw steel-making materials, ores and recycled steel products. We also handle packaged forest products, bulk aluminum, finished aluminum ingot and other bulk materials requiring specialized attention.
Facilities
Since 1974, we have served the marine industry with proven facilities and customized professional services.
| Our facilities and equipment include: |
| Berths | We have 790 m (2,600 ft) of cargo berth space. Our berths are suitable for Panamax bulk carriers and other dry cargo vessels to 70,000 dwt. We have rebuilt over 213 m (700 ft) of this berth space to handle the next generation of bulk carriers and cargoes. On-dock utilities include low-cost water and electric utilities. |
| Bulk Out-Loader | For ferrous scrap, mill scale and other dense bulk cargoes, we have a specialized berth and equipment that can provide out loading rates up to 635 mt (700 tons) per hour. |
| Container Crane | We have a 40 mt (44 ton) container crane with a 33.5 m (110 ft) outreach that is used for bulk cargo handling. At 25-30 cycles per hour our new crane’s loading and unloading rates are fast! |
| Whirley Revolver Cranes | For gearless ships or to augment ship’s gear, we have three electric 54 mt (60 ton) whirley revolver cranes. Crane cycle times provide for loading and un-loading rates up to 204 mt (225 tons) per hour per hold. A variety of grabs, buckets and lift equipment augment each crane’s ability to meet your needs. |
Intermodal Links
We offer complete custom intermodal supply chain services for bulk and break bulk cargoes to and from the Pacific Northwest. We offer ocean, inland barge, rail and highway access to provide every intermodal combination possible for bulk transport. And, we now have container handling capability.
Easy Ocean Access
We serve seaborne, inland barge service and multi-modal service by rail and highway to markets from Seattle to Chicago with quality and reliable service. Our Portland-based facility is closer to most Asian ports than the Seattle-Tacoma port facilities and is much closer to Asia than San Francisco-Oakland area ports.
Easy River Access
Our privately-managed berth scheduling provides reliable access. We schedule and perform our work to avoid berth conflicts. If we say the berth is ready for you, it is. Our facility is located in North Portland on the Willamette River with a 12.2 m (40 ft) access channel. We are 106 nautical miles from the Pacific Ocean on a wide federally-maintained navigation channel. The Columbia and Willamette Rivers are navigable around-the-clock. Cargo can be moved to and from our facility to all of the upriver ports to Lewiston, ID with extensive tug and barge resources available on the river system.
| Convenient Intermodal Services |
| Oceangoing Marine to and from Inland Barge | Near downtown Portland on the Willamette River, with draft at berth of up to 12.2 m (40 ft) we are well suited to handle heavy steel shipments from oceangoing transport to inland barge or on-dock rail. |
| Marine and Barge to and from On-Dock and In-Yard Rail | We have a choice of rail options to offer. We do our own switching of rail cars on our loop track so there is less chance for delay in cargo movements. Through on-dock rail, we provide convenient access to Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific rail service. |
| Marine to and from Highway | We have excellent overland transport connections and are located close to I-5 for north-south highway destinations from Vancouver, BC to the San Francisco Bay Area. I-84 is nearby for eastern highway destinations. |
| Easy Highway Access | We are located 20 minutes by road from Portland International Airport. We are located less than 20 minutes from the intersection of I-5 and I-84. From I-5, take Exit 306A west and Columbia Boulevard and you can reach our entrance gate in 10 minutes. |
| Safe Storage Inventory | We can maintain the secure inventory of your landed cargo and handle your distribution needs. |
| Prompt On-Demand Re-Delivery | As your re-delivery needs are identified we can expedite them. From less-than-truckload to several railcars, we can handle your needs with quick custom on-demand response using our own staff. |
| Specialized Upland Storage | We have over 12 hectares (30 acres) of upland storage space that can be custom tailored to meet the segregation and aggregation demands of your cargo. Upland storage is secluded in our own industrial setting—secure, fenced, lighted, well-drained, on pavement or compacted gravel. |
| Project Cargoes | We can provide a combined project cargo lift capacity of 109 mt (120 tons). We can handle industrial equipment, metal-working machinery, and electric power generating components. Your specialized cargo can be moved directly to or from our on-dock rail or to ocean-going or upland barge transportation. |
| Transit Warehouses | We offer over 7,000 m2 (75,000 ft2) of inside industrial transit warehouse storage space. Some of this warehouse space is crane equipped. All of the warehouse space is highway truck accessible. These spaces are also used to package and add value to your cargo in the same handy location. |
| In-Yard Equipment | We have a wide variety of in-facility equipment to handle your bulk and break bulk transportation needs. Our equipment includes several heavy-duty 32 mt (35 ton) transport and dump trucks, 27 mt (30 ton) forklifts and 18 mt (20 ton) mobile cranes operated by our own staff. Our equipment is augmented by the loading and off-loading equipment provided on a rental basis. |
