Production Engineer (Metal Inspector)

The Production Engineer (PE) is responsible for ensuring the correct functioning and operation of metal recovery separation processes used in urban mining operations. Working closely with the Research and Development Department, the PE will develop improved and more efficient processes for the mining of scrap metal from auto shredding processes. The PE shall be responsible for process optimization and will use statistical process control (SPC) methods to develop control charts for the detection of ‘out of condition’ states.

 

The Production Engineer position will cover many facets and roles required for the effective management of state-of-the-art multi-million dollar metals separation plants. The incumbent’s roles will include…

  • Product Engineering, responsible for turn-over of R&D process development into production facilities
  • Process Engineering, development of new processes, process improvement, process maintenance
  • Quality Engineering, responsible for managing the quality sampling program
  • Reliability Engineering, supporting Maintenance and Production Supervisors in root cause analysis and driving reliability programs for the separation processes

 This position operates within flexible parameters. 

Essential Functions:

 

  1. Product Engineering
  2. Responsible for successful introduction of new process startups in manufacturing operations, monitoring modifications and upgrades, and maintaining existing processes

 

  1. Process Engineering
  2. Responsible for understanding and applying the principles of magnets, eddy currents, induction sorters, optical sorters, XRF, XRT, aspiration systems, ballistic separation methods and density separation the physical properties of metals to develop optimal separation process
  3. Works closely with the manufacturing team to monitor process, improve efficiency, output, safety, and to develop process-centric maintenance schedules
  4. Creates ‘Design of Experiments’ (DOE’s) in order to evaluate feasibility of process changes and to aid in better understanding of the ‘mechanics of current operations’
  5. Provides training to manufacturing on maintaining process

 

  1. Quality Engineering
  2. Manages the material sampling programs to ensure accurate and representative data on product quality and process quality is current
  3. Develops and maintains control charts and monitoring systems to ensure that variances in process are identified and corrective measures are in place to minimize effects on product quality and recovery

 

  1. Reliability Engineering
  2. Works with Maintenance and Production supervisor to identify PMs from equipment analysis using RCM techniques (Reliability Centered Maintenance) and root cause analysis
  3. Identifies and supports equipment design activities to improve reliability 

 

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Material Science or equivalent.  Experience in metals recycling or mining industry preferred.  Experience with eddy current separators, induction sorters, magnet, etc. is a plus.  Background in industrial process development and statistical process control preferred. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.

 

Advanced knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite is necessary to be successful. Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to work and cooperate with others to complete various tasks with established deadlines.  Strong oral and written communication skills to successfully present business cases and resolve various types of negotiations.
