Scrap Metal
In the process of recycling hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year, our Pick-n-Pull facilities remove and recycle as many usable parts as possible. The remaining vehicle hulks are crushed and sold to metal recyclers (including the Metals Recycling Business where geographically feasible) which process them into sellable recycled metal. This metal, in turn, is used by steel mills (including our Steel Manufacturing Business) and foundries to produce new finished steel products and other finished goods, including parts for new vehicles. This loop illustrates the vertical integration between Schnitzer Steel’s business units and also how sustainability is ingrained in our business model.
